ON WRITING FOR MULTIMEDIA
Full Text “On Writing for Multimedia” available at AMAZON.
Digital multimedia composition presents unique challenges. Composers must take into account orchestration of separate media elements, proper notation for fixed media scores, and logistics. At the start of the composition, the artist must think on several planes, unifying in her mind the disparate components of the piece. Whereas in the past orchestration decisions involved choice of instrument and timbre, contemporary multimedia composers incorporate visual imagery, interactivity, performance art, and a countless number of nonmusical elements in their compositions. Many times the artist must develop all the parts simultaneously in order for the overall piece to be successful.
